PET Scan

A PET scan was done on Katie on April 27th. In a PET scan Katie is injected with a radioactive sugar (FDG). Cancer feeds on sugar so if any active cancer is present it shows up as bright blowing areas on the xray films. Here is what they found:
  1. There are no abnormal areas of FDG uptake in the neck, chest, abdomen or pelvis.
  2. No abnormal increased uptake of FDG throughout the entire skeleton.
  3. The presiously described mass in the right paracardiac area demonstrates a fluid density by Hounsfield units and no increased FDG uptake. This appearance is very atypical for lymphoma unless the mass is entirely necrosed.

To me that says there is no active cancer and the tumor is liquidifing. They said this is not normal or "atypical" for lymphoma unless the mass is entirely decomposing or dead. They don't understand it! For us we know that it was the "prayers and the power of God!"

CAT Scan

A CAT scan was done on Katie on April 22. They found "some cysts in the kidneys" and some "areas of subsegmental atelectasis in the lungs". They also said while there is still a bulky tumor present. the size of this tumor has significantly decreased. Thank the Lord! A PET scan will follow to show the areas of active cancer.

Pray for Katie

Katie is 12 years old and was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease on January 7th, 2005.

I come to you requesting prayer. On Sunday we learned that a member of our church is very sick. Her name is Katie Wernecke. and she is a 7th grader at Banquete Jr. High. She began coughing and not feeling well on Thursday she was taken to the doctor and diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in the 4th stage, complicated by a microplasma pneumonia. The doctors knew that her lungs were affected and were more than sure her kidneys were, too, but were unable to do the necessary biopsies, bone marrow tests, etc. until the pneumonia was more under control. When Brother Keith, Debbie, and I got to the hospital yesterday, she had been taken for the biopsies, bone marrow, and to have a port put in for the chemo.

She is a WONDERFUL young lady and full of high spirits. Our church has gotten her a prayer pager. (And she's SO excited to have her first pager!) Please pray for her and her family, but when you do, send her a page and let her know. It is one thing to be told you're being prayed for, but a total other to actually KNOW when it's done. It is my prayer that her pager will go off at least every hour of the day and night. She has been given a map 0f the US and we are in the process of printing out the 818 page list of every zip code in the country so she can track the prayers going up for her. Here's how you can be a part of a blessing:

When you've said your prayer, dial 1-361-333-KATY (5289).
You'll hear a message confirming that you've reached the pager
At the beep, dial in your zip code and the # key. (example: 78330#)
You'll hear a series of beeps and you're page is on it's way to Katie!

Thank you so very much for praying for this great little girl. She is a
blessing to our church and our youth and we're praying so hard for her.

In God's Love,
Terrie

Katie is Back in Hospital Needs Blood Transfusions

Katie was put back in the hospital after her last chemo because her blood counts were too low. She needed platelets and a blood transfusion according to the doctor. My wife and I had asked the doctor to postpone her last chemo for one week so Katie could get stronger and so she could attend her Bible Drill competition in Houston. He also knew we were religiously opposed to a blood transfusion. (We are not Jehovah Witnesses but it is Biblical. ) And we had given him other options such as storing Katie's own blood, or getting blood from her mom. He did not act on these requests. He did not postpone the chemo. She still went to the Bible Drill competion in Houston after chemo but was not strong enough to perform at her best and she did not win to go on to state.

The doctor had a hospital social worker call the Texas Child Protection Services and did the blood transfusion without our approval. They told us in Texas ( and most states) we have no right to refuse a medical treatment for our child. The parents have no rights at all to decide on the childs treatments with the doctor. The doctor is playing God. It isn't the cancer that is killing her and making her blood counts low. It is the chemo treatments themselves that make the blood counts low and caused the need for blood transfusions. If doctor Alter had waited another week as we reqested she would have recovered enough not to need a blood transfusion.

The chemo treatments are barbaric, consisting of deadly chemicals that were even baned from war, and work on the premise that cancer is a fast growing cell and if you can kill all the fast growing cells in the body you can kill the cancer, if you don't end up killing the patient too or dying from a secondary infection ( then you didn't die from the cancer). Of course you have fast growing cells in your hair, your mouth and throat lining and your stomach lining and that is why your hair falls out and your mouth, throat and stomach linings slough off and cause all the mouth and throat sores and you through up your insides and get diarrhea.

While she was in the hospital this time her mouth and throat sloughed off and was raw and she had mucositis. Her body was producing so much mucos in her throat she couldn't swallow and was choking on the stuff and coughing it up and throughing it up. She couldn't and didn't eat anything for four days. They had her on IV's, potassium and saline, but no feeding tube. She lost about 8 pounds and she didn't need to lose another ounce. I don't call that proper care. I think of Terrie Schiavo. That woman didn't have to die.

Why was it worse this time? Well my wife found out that they give ever increasing doses of the chemo drugs after each treatment. The doctor and social worker also did not help things by not giving Katie a positive attitude and a will and desire to go on and compete in her Bible Drill and softball. They said "there is always next year". But that is her life, and what she enjoys and looks forward to. They have also taken her out of school and away from her friends. When her immune system is strong enough I take her to the school for lunch so she can be with her classmates and friends. Baseball, school, church, and her friends are what keeps her going. She told me at the beginning that "its only cancer, dad". She didn't want to be informed of what was going to happen in the future and all the possible side effects. She said she would take it one day at a time. She is my brave little christian soldier. Got to quit before I cry.

She got out of the hospital on April 11th. She will beat this. Thanks for all your prayers.

Dad
